Mount Takao has a close association with the Shugendo Buddhist tradition of Tengu. The mountain is also famous for Shugendo, which is a rigorous discipline-based asceticism practiced in the mountains. There is a Buddhist temple on the mountain called Takao-san Yakuo-in Yuki-ji Temple. It attracts many visitors seeking blessings from the Tengu.
