Visit Japan Web invites you to explore Hakone Tozan Railway, Japan’s oldest mountain railway. It offers enjoyment to more than just railway enthusiasts. The small trains meander through a narrow, densely forested valley, crossing numerous bridges and tunnels. They stop at small stations along the route and reversing direction at three switchbacks.

The Hakone Tozan Line comprises of two sections. The lower section from Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto is utilized by Odakyu trains from central Tokyo and is not particularly remarkable. Much more remarkable is the upper section from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora, which is serviced by the small mountain trains. At Gora, many travelers transfer to the cable car for Lake Ashinoko.

The 35-minute train journey from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora is especially stunning in June and July. There will be thousands of hydrangeas bloom alongside the tracks and illuminate in the evenings. The train’s nickname is the Hydrangea Train. In June and July, the blooms are almost close enough to touch. They are typically at their best around the start of July and visitors can observe them from the trains.

The lush forest and steep mountain pass along the Hakone Tozan Railway line make for spectacular views. From the hydrangeas during the summer to the reds and yellows during the fall, each season brings its own charm. The 40-minute ride is enjoyable at any time.

Special trains run from mid June through mid July between Hakone-Yumoto and Gora Stations for the viewing of the illuminated flowers. They depart in the evenings, twice in each direction, and require seat reservations.
