Visit Japan Web invites you to explore Nishijin Textile Center. The kimono has been an iconic symbol of Japan for centuries. Kyoto has served as the primary hub for kimono and textile production for over 1000 years within Japan itself.

There’a significant decline in demand for kimonos following the introduction of Western clothing during the Meiji period. But Kyoto continues to maintain its reputation for kimonos and textiles. The Nishijin Textile Centre, located in the heart of Kyoto’s Nishijin weaving area, is a consortium comprising more than 700 small companies dedicated to preserving the ancient textile tradition.

The seven-story “Nishijin” Union building is situated on Horikawa Street, just south of Imadegawa. The Nishijin Textile Museum serves as a museum, factory, shop, and gallery all in one.Visitors have the opportunity to further enhance their experience here. Reserving a hands-on weaving experience allows you to explore the art of weaving fabric on mini-looms using traditional methods.

Additionally, guests can try on a beautiful kimono and even rent it for the entire day, creating an unforgettable day out in Kyoto. Furthermore, women have the opportunity to experience becoming a real maiko or a court lady of the Heian period. A professional will provide full makeup and dress you in a luxurious maiko kimono or a 12-layered kimono. It is the type worn by imperial court ladies over 1000 years ago. Please note that these activities are not complimentary and advance reservation is required.

The Nishijin Textile Centre is one of the best places to shop for souvenirs in Kyoto as the prices are comparatively cheap, and the variety of the goods available would satisfy even the pickiest of customers.
