Visit Japan Web invites you to explore Ohori Park, located in central Fukuoka. It is a delightful park featuring a sizable pond at its core. Encircling the pond is a walking path that spans just over two kilometers. It attracts joggers, pet walkers and those seeking a leisurely walk by the water.

The name “Ohori” translates to “moat” in Japanese, as the park’s pond historically served as part of the moat system of the nearby Fukuoka Castle. Constructed between 1926 and 1929, the park’s design is influenced by the classical garden style of West Lake in China. At the center of the pond, there are three interconnected islands, accessible via elegant stone bridges.

The Fukuoka Art Museum is located  by the pond at the southeastern corner. It houses a permanent collection featuring Buddhist statues dating back to the 11th century, as well as paintings and sculptures by modern artists such as Miro and Dali. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum regularly hosts various special temporary exhibitions.

A short distance south of the museum, visitors will discover the Ohori Park Japanese Garden. It differs from the rest of the park since it requires a small entrance fee. Here, visitors can admire traditional elements of Japanese gardens such as dry landscapes and tea houses. The Gokoku Shrine is located across the street about 150 meters to the southeast. The path to the shrine passes under a massive torii gate. The main shrine building is a distinctive golden structure in front of a spacious yard.
