Visit Japan Web invites you to explore Saimyo-ji, one of the three renowned temples of Mt. Takao. It is located between Kosan-ji and Jingo-ji. There’s a picturesque vermilion bridge spanning a mountain river surrounded by maple trees. After crossing the bridge, a short ascent leads visitors to the entrance gate and the main temple area. The volunteers at Saimyo-ji are welcoming and eager to guide visitors to the main hall. They can closely observe the exquisite wooden statuary there.

In November, visitors can enjoy green tea and a sweet treat in a side hall. A delightful side garden offers a picturesque view of the mountains, especially during the vibrant bloom of azaleas in late spring or fall.

Saimyo-ji is famous for its iconic sacred bridge. A vibrant red arch connects the temple to the main road between Kosan-ji and Jingo-ji. This bridge extends over the Kiyotakigawa, a tributary of the Katsuragawa. It offers views from the road, the opposite side, and even from the riverbed below for those willing to navigate a slightly rugged path. The bridge’s beauty is especially celebrated in autumn when it is enveloped by colorful maple leaves. During the Mt. Takao Illumination, it is illuminated at night for a period in November.

While most temples house a large bronze bell, not all are accessible to visitors. At Saimyo-ji, a 100 yen donation at the main hall allows you to ring the bell yourself after offering a prayer for future happiness. When ringing the bell, strike it firmly but with moderation, allowing the sound to resonate over the mountainside. The deep resonance of the bell evokes a sense of the temple’s past.
