Visit Japan Web invites you to explore the Shogunzuka Mound, situated in the eastern mountains of Kyoto. It is believed that Emperor Kanmu first surveyed the valley before constructing the ancient capital city of Kyoto. Continuing this tradition, Shogunzuka is predominantly recognized for its observation decks, providing stunning panoramic views of the city below. This area is a part of Shorenin Temple, with its main structures situated at the mountain’s base.

On the west side of the grounds stands the older West Observation Deck. It offers views towards central Kyoto and reaches as far as Osaka on clear days. However, the surrounding trees obstruct views of most popular tourist sights around the mountain’s base.

The superior vantage points from Shogunzuka offer a breathtaking panoramic view from the refined North Observation Deck. Visitors can gaze out over northern Kyoto all the way to Mount Hieizan from this spacious wooden deck that appears to hover above the trees. At an elevation of nearly 220 meters above the city, it provides an unobstructed line of sight. Careful observation reveals popular tourist attractions such as the Imperial Palace, Heian Shrine, and Nanzenji below.

The Shogunzuka Mound purportedly houses a 2.5-meter-high clay statue of a general adorned in battle armor. This statue is a protective talisman for the city. According to legend, the entire mound rumbles when the city is in peril.

Next to the mound stands the Seiryuden temple hall. There’s a  painting of the fearsome Buddhist deity Fudo Myoo. Fudo Myoo is depicted holding a sword and rope, surrounded by flames. This painting is an important object of worship at Shorenin Temple as well as a national treasure. A reproduction of the painting is on display inside the hall.
