Visit Japan Web invites you to explore the Yokohama Museum of Art, established in 1989. It is located in the modern Minato Mirai 21 district of Yokohama, Japan, adjacent to the Yokohama Landmark Tower.
The museum boasts a collection of works by esteemed modern artists. Dadaist and Surrealist creations are particularly well represented.
Additionally, the museum showcases pieces by significant Japanese artists, especially those with ties to Yokohama. For example Imamura Shiko, Kanzan Shimomura and Chizuko Yoshida, as well as numerous works by Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi. Noteworthy there are also works of artists like Kiyoshi Hasegawa, Yasumasa Morimura, and Lee Ufan.
The architectural design of the Yokohama Museum of Art was by Kenzo Tange. He’s a Japanese architect who received the 1987 Pritzker Prize for architecture. Described as an “attractive and spacious building” that is “airy and well-lit,” the structure exudes architectural excellence.
The museum’s main hall stands at a height of 18 meters and provides access to the second and third floors. An impressive feature is the glass ceiling, allowing natural light to illuminate the space while louvers regulate the light levels. Recognized for its outstanding acoustics, the hall is frequently utilized for new art projects and cultural events. It showcases an exemplary display of modern architecture.
In 2019, the Yokohama Museum of Art marked its 30th anniversary with a commemorative exhibition featuring over 12,000 artifacts in a 400-piece display. Named “Meet the Collection,” the exhibition was divided into two parts, “life” and “world”, comprising seven sections of art, including paintings, photographs, videos and sculptures. Moreover, four artists – Asai Yusuke, Imazu Kei, Suga Kishio, and Tabaimo – were engaged in presenting their own works in conjunction with the museum’s collection on display.
